Copper is an essential trace element in the human body, and its level is directly related to many diseases. While the source of copper in human body is mainly intake from food, then the detection of copper ions (Cu2+) in food becomes crucial. Here, we synthesized a novel probe (E)-3-hydroxy-2-styryl-4H-benzo[h]chromen-4-one (NSHF) and explored the binding ability of NSHF for Cu2+ using nuclear magnetic resonance hydrogen spectroscopy (1H NMR), high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), Job's plot method and density functional theory (DFT). NSHF shows the advantages of fast response time, good selectivity and high sensitivity for Cu2+. The fluorescence intensity ratio (F/F0) of NSHF shows a good linear relationship with the concentration of Cu2+ and the detection limit is 0.061 µM. NSHF was successfully applied to the detection of Cu2+ in real samples. In addition, a simple and convenient Cu2+ detection platform was constructed by combining NSHF with a smartphone and a UV lamp, which can realize the rapid detection of Cu2+. This work provides an effective tool for the real-time detection of Cu2+.

BACKGROUND: Hydrazine (N2H4) is a highly toxic and versatile chemical raw material, which poses a serious threat to the environment and human health when used in large quantities. However, the traditional methods for the detection of N2H4 have the disadvantages of time-consuming, complicated operation and expensive instruments. In contrast, fluorescence probes have many advantages, such as simple operation, high sensitivity, good selectivity, and fast response time. Therefore, there is an urgent need for a fluorescence probe that can rapidly and accurately detect the presence of N2H4 and monitor the changes in its concentration. RESULTS: For this purpose, we designed and synthesized a series of myricetin fluorescence probes 3-(substituent group)-5,7-dimethoxy-4-oxo-2-(3,4,5-trimethoxy. phenyl)-4H-chromen-4-one (Myr-R) for N2H4 detection. In the presence of N2H4, the probe 5,7-dimethoxy-3-(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorobenzoate)-2-(3,4,5-trimethoxyphen-yl). -4H-chr-omen-4-one (Myr-3) shows significant fluorescence changes, double emission properties and a large Stokes shift (183 nm), and exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity to N2H4 (The detection limit is 93 nM). Importantly, the qualitative and quantitative analysis of N2H4 in water, soil, and air can be accomplished using fluorescence, smartphone, and UV lamps coupled with Myr-3. In addition, Myr-3 can be used for monitoring and imaging intracellular N2H4. Meanwhile, the fluorophore 3-hydroxy-5,7-dimethoxy-2-(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)-4H-benzopyran-4-one (Myr-Me) was applied to fingerprinting of different substrate materials due to the fact that it exhibits strong yellow fluorescence emission in the solid state and shows excellent contrast and high resolution. SIGNIFICANCE: The probe Myr-3 is not only able to rapidly detect N2H4 in complex environments, but also can be used for imaging intracellular N2H4. In addition, the fluorophore Myr-Me can be used as an effective imaging agent for visual fingerprinting. These properties enable the probe Myr-3 and the fluorophore Myr-Me for a wide range of potential applications in related fields.

BACKGROUND: There is epidemiological evidence which suggests an association between 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels and bone and muscle function; however, it is unclear whether vitamin D supplementation has an added benefit beyond bone health. Here, we investigated the effects of vitamin D3 supplementation (1 month) on physical performance in Chinese university students in winter. METHODS: One hundred and seventeen eligible subjects with 25(OH)D (19.2 ± 7.8 ng/mL) were randomly assigned to either vitamin D3 supplement (N = 56; 1000 IU/day) or the control (N = 61) group for 1 month. Pre- and post-measurements included: 1) serum levels of 25(OH)D; 2) musculoskeletal and pulmonary function [vertical jump height (VJH) and right handgrip strength (RHS), forced vital capacity (FVC), and forced expiratory volume at 1s (FEV1)]; 3) bone turnover markers [parathyroid hormone (PTH), n-terminal osteocalcin (N-MID), and calcium]; 4) hemoglobin-related parameters [hemoglobin (Hb), hematocrit (HCT), red blood cells (RBC), and red cell distribution width (RDW)]; 5) lipid parameters [total triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C)]; 6) Fatigue-related indicators [serum creatine kinase (CK), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and total testosterone (T)]. In addition, aerobic capacity was assessed by measuring maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) at baseline. RESULTS: During wintertime, supplementation with 1000 IU/d of vitamin D3 significantly increased serum 25(OH)D levels (from 18.85 ± 7.04 to 26.98 ± 5.88 ng/mL, p < 0.05), accompanied by a decrease of PTH (p < 0.05). However, vitamin D3 supplementation did not significantly impact the physical performance, serum lipid parameters, and bone turnover markers of students. Furthermore, 25(OH)D was found to be positively correlated with VJH and negatively correlated with PTH and TC at the beginning and end of the study (p < 0.05). In addition, the multiple linear regression analysis showed that 25(OH)D combined with athletic, gender, height, weight, Hb, and FVC could account for 84.0% of the VO2max value. CONCLUSIONS: The study demonstrated that one-month of 1000 IU/d of vitamin D3 supplementation during the winter had beneficial effects on 25(OH)D status and PTH. However, vitamin D3 intervention was not sufficient to improve physical performance. Furthermore, 25(OH)D levels combined with athletic, Hb and FVC could be a predictor of VO2max.

AIM: To evaluate the outcome of endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (En-DCR) with mucosal anastomosis in chronic dacryocystitis patients, with various categories of ethmoid sinuses. METHODS: Between July 2015 and September 2019, 1439 adult patients, representing 1623 affected eyes, presented with chronic dacryocystitis and were scheduled for En-DCR. The categories of ethmoid sinuses were preoperatively determined, using computed tomography-dacryocystography (CT-DCG), and were classified as category 1 (C1), category 2 (C2), and category 3 (C3). No sinuses anterior to the posterior lacrimal crest defined as C1. Sinuses found between the anterior edge of the lacrimal bone and the posterior lacrimal crest defined as C2. Sinuses found anterior to the lacrimal bone suture defined as C3. At the end of surgery, the dacryocyst and nasal mucosa were anastomosed in C1, and the dacryocyst mucosa and anterior ethmoid sinus were anastomosed in C2 and C3 ethmoid sinus patients. The surgical success rate and related complications, in patients with 3 categories of ethmoid cells, were monitored and documented. RESULTS: Postoperative data was obtained for 179 C1 affected eyes, 878 C2 affected eyes, and 432 C3 affected eyes. The overall success rate of En-DCR was 93.0% (1385/1489). Additionally, the success rates were comparable among the different ethmoid categories at 12mo post operation. We demonstrated that the major reason for surgical failure was intranasal ostial closure, due to granulation or scar tissue. CONCLUSION: En-DCR is a feasible and highly effective primary treatment for chronic dacryocystitis. To ensure surgical success, the surgery protocol must be designed in accordance with the category of ethmoid sinuses present in individual patient.

AIM: To demonstrate the outcomes of endoscopic endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy (En-DCR) with an novel lacrimal ostium stent (LOS) which was performed in patients with recurrent epiphora after failed external dacryocystorhinostomy (Ex-DCR) and analyze the causes of failed Ex-DCR. METHODS: From September 2015 and December 2017, the clinic data of 29 cases suffered from recurrent epiphora after failed Ex-DCR was reviewed. The LOS were implanted into the ostium at the end of the revisional surgery. The causes of failed Ex-DCR were analyzed before revisional surgeries. Outcome of revisional surgeries with the new device were evaluated as well. RESULTS: The major causes of failure of the external approach were synechiae formation in the nasal ostium (29/29), followed by inadequate removal of the bony wall (21/29), nasal synechiae formation between lateral wall of nose and middle turbinate (11/29), and the bone opening was not in good location (7/29). The rate of success after revisional surgery was 82.76%. Re-obstruction of the ostiums were found in 5 failed cases. CONCLUSION: Endoscopic approach with a novel LOS may be an effective procedure to manage recurrent epiphora after previous failed Ex-DCR surgery. Synechiae formation in the nasal ostium and inadequate removal of the bony wall were the major causes of failure of Ex-DCR.

AIM: To establish the necessity of silicone tube intubation in acute dacryocystitis (AD) patients undergoing endonasal endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (En-DCR). METHODS: Patients presenting with unilateral AD were randomly assigned to two treatment groups. En-DCR procedures were performed following lacrimal abscess formation, with the operation being performed with silicone intubation for patients in group B but not group A. Functional success was defined by an absence of additional AD episodes, no epiphora, and ostium patency as established via endoscopic evaluation or fluorescein irrigation. Operative success rates and demographic variables were compared between treatment groups. RESULTS: In total, 66 patients were analyzed in the present study (33 per group), with complete postoperative data having been successfully collected from 27 and 22 patients in group A and group B, respectively. All patients exhibited complete resolution of acute inflammation. Upon follow-up, granulation tissue was detected around the ostium at higher rates in group B (9/22, 40.9%) relative to group A (4/27, 14.8%). At the 12-month follow-up time point, patients in group A exhibited higher success rates (25/27, 92.6%) relative to patients in group B (20/22, 90.9%), but this difference was not significant. Cases of lacrimal passage reconstruction failure in both groups were attributed to excessive fibrous and/or granulation tissue formation proximal to the intranasal ostium. CONCLUSION: Given that these two operative approaches are associated with similar rates of operative success and in light of differences in granulation tissue formation, cost, and operative duration, these data do not support the routine silicone intubation of AD patients following En-DCR surgery.

The radioresistance of tumors affect the outcome of radiotherapy. Accumulating data suggest that 1α,25(OH)2D3 is a potential anti-oncogenic molecule in various cancers. In the present study, we investigated the radiosensitive effects and underlying mechanisms of 1α,25(OH)2D3 in vitro and in vivo. We found that 1α,25(OH)2D3 enhanced the radiosensitivity of lung cancer and ovarian cancer cells by promoting the NADPH oxidase-ROS-apoptosis axis. Compared to the group that only received radiation, the survival fraction and self-renewal capacity of cancer cells treated with a combination of 1α,25(OH)2D3 and radiation were decreased. Both apoptosis and ROS were significantly increased in the combination group compared with the radiation only group. Moreover, N-acetyl-L-cysteine, a scavenger of intracellular ROS, reversed the apoptosis and ROS induced by 1α,25(OH)2D3, indicating that 1α,25(OH)2D3 enhanced the radiosensitivity of cancer cells in vitro by promoting ROS-induced apoptosis. Moreover, our results demonstrated that 1α,25(OH)2D3 promoted the ROS level via activating NADPH oxidase complexes, NOX4, p22phox, and p47phox. In addition, knockdown of the vitamin D receptor (VDR) abolished the radiosensitization of 1α,25(OH)2D3, which confirmed that 1α,25(OH)2D3 radiosensitized tumor cells that depend on VDR. Similarly, our study also evidenced that vitamin D3 enhanced the radiosensitivity of cancer cells in vivo and extended the overall survival of mice with tumors. In summary, these results demonstrate that 1α,25(OH)2D3 enhances the radiosensitivity depending on VDR and activates the NADPH oxidase-ROS-apoptosis axis. Our findings suggest that 1α,25(OH)2D3 in combination with radiation enhances lung and ovarian cell radiosensitivity, potentially providing a novel combination therapeutic strategy.

Microrchidia 2 (MORC2) plays important roles in DNA damage repair and lipogenesis, but the clinical and functional role of MORC2 in cancer remains largely unexplored. In this study, we showed that MORC2 was widely expressed in human tissues while significantly up-regulated in most cancer types using immunohistochemical staining and analysis of messenger RNA expression profile of more than 2000 human tissue samples from 15 different organs (lung, prostate, liver, breast, brain, stomach, colon/rectum, pancreas, ovary, endometrium, skin, nasopharynx, kidney, esophagus, and bladder). We also found that the MORC2 expression level in high-grade cancer tissues was much more elevated and associated with unfavorable pathological characteristics, poor overall survival, and disease-free survival in several kinds of cancers such as non-small cell lung cancer and breast cancer. Gene set enrichment analysis was used to predict the genes modulated by MORC2, and the results showed that dysregulation of MORC2 in tumor may take part in the cell cycle regulation and genomic instability. We observed that MORC2 knockdown would arrest the cell cycle progress, and the genome of tumors with high MORC2 expression contained more point mutations and gene copy number variation, which validates our gene set enrichment analysis results. The results also showed that MORC2 knockdown would significantly inhibit the proliferation, colony forming, migration, and invasion in multiple cancer cell lines. Taken together, these results highlight the importance of MORC2 in tumorigenesis and cancer progression, and it may act as a potential diagnostic marker and therapeutic target for these diseases.

Neurolathyrism is a unique neurodegeneration disease caused by ß-N-oxalyl-L-α, ß- diaminopropionic (ß-ODAP) present in grass pea seed (Lathyrus stativus L.) and its pathogenetic mechanism is unclear. This issue has become a critical restriction to take full advantage of drought-tolerant grass pea as an elite germplasm resource under climate change. We found that, in a human glioma cell line, ß-ODAP treatment decreased mitochondrial membrane potential, leading to outside release and overfall of Ca2+ from mitochondria to cellular matrix. Increased Ca2+ in cellular matrix activated the pathway of ECM, and brought about the overexpression of ß1 integrin on cytomembrane surface and the phosphorylation of focal adhesion kinase (FAK). The formation of high concentration of FA units on the cell microfilaments further induced overexpression of paxillin, and then inhibited cytoskeleton polymerization. This phenomenon turned to cause serious cell microfilaments distortion and ultimately cytoskeleton collapse. We also conducted qRT-PCR verification on RNA-sequence data using 8 randomly chosen genes of pathway enrichment, and confirmed that the data was statistically reliable. For the first time, we proposed a relatively complete signal pathway to neurolathyrism. This work would help open a new window to cure neurolathyrism, and fully utilize grass pea germplasm resource under climate change.

Ovarian cancer is the most lethal gynecological malignancy due to its high metastatic ability. Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is essential during both follicular rupture and epithelium regeneration. However, it may also accelerate the progression of ovarian carcinomas. Experimental studies have found that 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin-D3 [1α,25(OH)2D3] can inhibit the proliferation of ovarian cancer cells. In this study, we investigated whether 1α,25(OH)2D3 could inhibit the migration of ovarian cancer cells via regulating EMT. We established a model of transient transforming growth factor-ß1(TGF-ß1)-induced EMT in human ovarian adenocarcinoma cell line SKOV-3 cells. Results showed that, compared with control, 1α,25(OH)2D3 not only inhibited the migration and the invasion of SKOV-3 cells, but also promoted the acquisition of an epithelial phenotype of SKOV-3 cells treated with TGF-ß1. We discovered that 1α,25(OH)2D3 increased the expression of epithelial marker E-cadherin and decreased the level of mesenchymal marker, Vimentin, which was associated with the elevated expression of VDR. Moreover, 1α,25(OH)2D3 reduced the expression level of transcription factors of EMT, such as slug, snail, and ß-catenin. These results indicate that 1α,25(OH)2D3 suppresses the migration and invasion of ovarian cancer cells by inhibiting EMT, implying that 1α,25(OH)2D3 might be a potential therapeutic agent for the treatment of ovarian cancer.

A fast and efficient way to synthesize a large number of silver nanowires was developed in this paper, in which the reaction conditions were optimized. Under the protection of Cu(NO3)2 silver nitrate was reduced by polyol with polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) in existence. The silver nanowires with uniform structure and good dispersion were obtained. Surface enhancement activity of the silver nanowires was detected by using RhB as a probe molecule,its surface enhancement factor can reach 6.4×105. The results showed that the nanowires significantly enhance the Raman spectroscopy of RhB. The normal Raman spectroscopy (NRS), Raman spectroscopy of D-carnitine solution and Surface enhanced Raman Spectroscopy of D-carnitine by means of the new base were obtained. There are obvious Raman peaks at 3 100~2 800 and 1 700~200 cm-1, and the peak of 1 700~200 cm-1 in the surface enhanced Raman spectra of the D-carnitine can be obviously enhanced. The analysis showed that the angle between the molecular and silver nanoparticles were 180°. The vibrational peaks were assigned comprehensively. Compared with the NRS and SERS of D-carnitine, the detailed structural information of D-carnitine was obtained. In this paper, the surface enhanced Raman spectra of the D-carnitine absorbed on the synthesized silver nanoparticles were obtained, and the minimum detection concentration was 10-6 mol·L-1. The new method can be a rapid and characteristic way to detect D-carnitine, and it will also provide an important guidance for the studies on pharmacology of D-carnitine.

Infrared spectroscopy (IR), the normal Raman spectroscopy (NRS) and the surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) in new Ag/Cu nanomaterial of Rotundine were studied in the present paper. The IR and the NRS of Rotundine were calculated by the density functional theory (DFT) using B3LYP/6-311+G(d, p), then the spectral intensity graph of Rotundine were given. The vibrational peaks were assigned comprehensively by the visualization software of Gauss view 5. 0. Rotundine has obvious infrared and Raman vibrational peak in the wave number range of 3 300-2500 and 1 800-600 cm(-1). SnCl2 and PVP was used as capping agent for the silver nanoparticles in SERS of Rotundine. Finally, by using the method of cyclic immersion well dispersed silver nanoparticles was obtained and achieved good enhancement effect. This molecule acquired strong selective enhancement vibration peak, In the wave number ranges of 1 500-1 400 and 1 000-700 cm(-1) the enhancement effect is most obvious. After analyzed, the methylene of this molecule is adsorbed on the silver nanoparticles surface and the angle between the benzene ring and the silver substrate is close to 90 degrees. The theoretically calculated spectra of Rotundine are consistent with the obtained experimental spectra. There are some differences may be due to the interaction forces between molecules and so on. The visualization software displayed the structure characteristics and molecular group vibration of this molecular visually and provided important basis for assigning the vibrational peaks. Rotundine is an important traditional Chinese medicine agent contained in many kinds of sedative drugs. The study provides a strong basis for the rapid, feature and trace identification of Rotundine and also supplies important reference for the biological role of central inhibition of analgesic drugs.

Normal Raman spectroscopy and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy of aspirin and aspirin tablet were reported, and the vibrational and enhanced peaks were assigned; the interaction of aspirin with DNA was investigated by SERS and UV. The results showed that NRS and SERS of aspirin and aspirin tablet were consistent basically, which indicated that excipient hardly affected the detection of aspirin; in SERS, aspirin was absorbed perpendicularly on silver colloid through the carboxyl group and the benzene ring; The interaction was mainly caused by the inserting-action mode between aspirin and DNA, and the benzene ring and C=O of aspirin were inserted between the base pair of the double helix structure of DNA, which provided important information and useful reference for understanding deeply the mechanism of action of this kind of drug.

We wish to report the further design and improved synthesis that resulted in two series of target molecules, TM-1 and TM-2, with remarkably simplified structures containing ß-amino ketone of discrete nabumetone moiety. These were obtained via a 'one-pot, two-step, three-component' protocol of Mannich reaction with yield up to 97%. A total of 28 out of 31 new compounds were characterized using (1)H NMR, (13)C NMR, ESI MS and HRMS techniques. Studies on their antidiabetic activities, screened in vitro at 10 µg mL(-1) level, indicate that TM-2 possesses peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor activation and α-glucosidase inhibition activity significantly stronger than that of TM-1, and also that of the series B compounds that were previously synthesized by the group. Analysis of the structure-activity relationship points to the sulfanilamide unit as the most probable potent group of ß-amino ketone and, on the basis of which, a tangible strategy is presented for the development of new antidiabetic drugs.

The degradation of fluoranthene was researched by combined means of multiple fluorescence spectra, including emission, synchronous, excitation emission matrix (EEM), time-scan and photometry. The characteristics of the degradation and fluoranthene molecular changes within the degradation's process were also discussed according to the information about the degradation provided by all of the fluorescence spectra mentioned above. The equations of fluoranthene's degradation by potassium ferrate were obtained on the bases of fitting time-scan fluorescence curves at different time, and the degradation's kinetic was speculated accordingly. From the experimental results, multiple fluorescence data commonly reflected that it had same degradation rate at the same reaction time. t = 10 s, and the degradation rate is -55%, t = 25 s, -81%, t = 40 s, -91%. No new fluorescent characteristic was observed within every degradation' stage. The reaction stage during t < or = 20 s was crucial, in which the degradation process is closest to linear relationship. After this beginning stage, the linear relationship deviated gradually with the development of the degradation process. The degradation of fluoranthene by potassium ferrate was nearly in accord with the order of the first order reaction.

Abstract Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), normal Raman spectroscopy (NRS) of the solids and saturated solutions and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) on the silver colloidal substrate were reported. The vibrational modes of each group were analyzed, and the enhanced peaks were assigned and compared. The results showed that the major differences between the epimers were the frequency of the CH3 asymmetric stretching vibration and symmetric in-plane deformation vibration of them. According to the mechanism and laws of SERS, the epimers were absorbed on the silver colloid through the P-O bond, carboxyl group and the five-membered ring perpendicularly. The establishment of this adsorption model which realized the rapid identification and the discrimination between the epimers provided important information and useful reference of the adrenal cortical hormone drugs.

RESUMEN

Infrared spectroscopy (IR) and normal Raman spectroscopy (NRS) of Sudan red(III) and Sudan red(IV), and surface -enhanced Raman spectroscopy(SERS) of them on Cu-Ag nanocomposite material were reported in the present paper. The density functional theory (DFT) calculation was applied to calculate IR and NRS on a B3LYP/6-311+G (d, p) level, and the theoretically calculated spectra were carefully compared with the obtained experimental spectra. The vibrational peaks were assigned by the software of Gauss view 5.0. Rapid identification of Sudan red was realized, which provided profitable basis for characteristics and quick test of Sudan dyes, and reliable detection method of food security.

A new microwave digestion/inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for simultaneous determination of 8 heavy metals including Zn, Cu, As, Pb, Cd, Cr, Hg and Ni in wastes of scale hoggery from livestock parks in Chongqing and its biogas slurry after anaerobic digestion, with which an all round, fast analysis of multiple heavy metals in biogas slurry was realized. From the experiment, Zn, Cu, As, Pb, Cd, Cr, Hg, and Ni were the dominating heavy metals in biogas slurry. The linear correlation coefficients for the heavy metals were between 0.999 89 and 0.999 98, indicating a good linear correlation. The determination limits were between 0.79 and 25.0 ng x L(-1), recovery adding standard between 96.5% and 107.6%, RSD between 1.06% and 4.35%. These parameters revealed that the method has good precision and accuracy, which could be applied to the heavy metals detection in biogas slurry, and provide reference for its post-use.

The present paper reports the FT-infrared spectra and FT-Raman spectra of the S-thyminyl-L-cysteine. The optimal concentration of the S-thyminyl-L-cysteine on silver sol is 10(-4) mol L(-1). The interaction of S-thyminyl-L-cysteine with Ag nanoparticles was adsorbed by COO-, NH3+, S, and ring in the tilted way. Amino peak was enhanced in the acidic condition, carboxyl peak was enhanced in alkaline condition. Adsorption of S-thyminyl-L-cysteine on silver nanoparticles was mainly with carboxyl under the acidic condition and with amino under the alkaline condition. Other groups had no change at different pH. Establishment of this adsorption model provided important information and useful reference for further Raman spectra study of PNA, peptides and other biological molecules.

Twenty five new beta-aminoalcohols containing nabumetone moiety were prepared via the reduction of potassium borohydride with a convenient and efficient procedure, starting from beta-aminoketones that have been synthesized by our group. Their chemical structures were determined by IR, MS, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, HR-MS and antidiabetic activities were screened in vitro. Preliminary results revealed that the antidiabetic activity of most beta-aminoalcohols were better than that of the corresponding beta-aminoketones. Although most compounds showed weak antidiabetic activity, the alpha-glucosidase inhibitory activity of compounds 5hd(1) and 5id(2) reached 74.37% and 90.15%, respectively, which were superior to the positive control. The relative peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor response element (PPRE) activity of five compounds were more than 60%, among them compound 5ca possessed the highest activity (112.59%). As lead molecules of antidiabetic agents, compounds 5hd(1), 5id(2) and 5ca deserve further study.
